Betty Skinner, whose story is the inspiration for The Hidden Life Awakened, encourages us to find the still point in the midst of the chaos of our lives: “The chaos around us never changes, what changes is that we begin to view the world and ourselves differently.”
Our whole life’s journey is to find this still point, this place of peace, in the present moment. I call it present moment awareness. Underneath this outer life we live; the one that everybody sees, is another life; the hidden life, the hidden inner life that we must get in touch with. If we can find the ground of our being, which is in Christ, and learn to come from this place, to live from this place, to abide in this place, we’ll find the still point, the reconciling factor in the midst of the chaos of the world. Amid our families and our friends. The chaos around us never changes, what changes is that we begin to view the world and ourselves differently. So if we are going to be the still point in the midst of the chaos outside, it’s imperative that we find the still point inside and live from that place. We can’t be the still point out here until we find the still point in here. This is the essence of the inner journey, and it involves attention and focus, preparation, process, and perseverance. It involves dying while we are living—dying to the egoic self, the false self, and coming alive to the true self. I like the term, still point in the midst of the chaos. . . .
